A good sequence for you is to make choices in this order:
Your Career
Your Major
Your College or Training Best Suited for your Career
Most scholarships are targeted for certain careers, majors, or colleges. You will be more successful if you choose a career direction before you apply to colleges!! As you do apply to college, apply for financial aid and scholarships from the colleges you hope to attend. Not every career requires a four-year college degree! There are many high paying jobs available that require training or focused education/certification beyond high school. Give time and thought to discovering your own values, interests, and skills.
**SAR is your Student Aid Report. EFC is Estimated Family Contribution.**
It takes time to apply for scholarships. Remember that the goal is to help you receive money to pay for college expenses. Pay attention to eligibility requirements and due dates. Make every application a good reflection of yourself--in neatness, accuracy, and spelling. Start by completing the RMHS Local Scholarship Application.
Research other scholarship possibilities, especially at colleges or schools you want to attend, or targeted for your major or career choice.
Keep a calendar of due dates, user names, passwords, and important website addresses.
Finish your FAFSA and Cal Grant applications as early as possible.
Don't think that the first draft of a scholarship essay is going to be your best. You will probably need to re-write it more than once to get a good essay.
When you apply to college, apply for any scholarships available from that college.
Beware of scholarship scams!! There should NEVER be a charge for you to apply for a scholarship, or to apply for financial aid from FAFSA or Cal Grant. Tell your counselor if you receive mail or invitations promising to get you a scholarship or to get you into college for a price.
The RMHS Local Scholarship Application will be due December 13th, 2024

***These are some of the methods that scholarship awards are paid:***
1. The scholarship organization will wait until you have enrolled in college, and they will then forward your payment to the financial aid office at the college you are attending. Sometimes they pay half of the award toward the first semester, and the other half toward the second semester.
2. The scholarship organization will give the scholarship dollar amount to RMHS. You will have to verify your college enrollment by sending RMHS a copy of your college identification card with student I.D. number and your class enrollment schedule. RMHS will issue the check either to you, or to your college, depending on the instructions from the scholarship provider. This money does not get paid out until August or September due to RMHS ASB regulations.
3. The organization will make the check payable to you, the student, and will award it to you at an awards program, or whenever they wish.
If you are awarded a scholarship by a college, you cannot use that money to pay for another college. You must attend the college that awarded you the scholarship, if you accept it.
